Children love watching seeds germinate. This is particularly true when seeds are sprouting quickly. Alfalfa is one of the easiest seeds to grow and should grow within one week. To see the seeds germinate in the soil, sprinkle a few alfalfa seeds on a piece of damp paper towel.
What you will need:
A package of Alfalfa seed (about 1.5g).
a saucer or small plate
Three pieces of paper towel
an air mister, or a small water jug
How to grow
Set 3 sheets of paper towel on a plate.
After that, you should drain the water off the plate. The paper towel should be moist, but the seeds shouldn’t be floating in water.
Place the seeds in a uniform manner on the towel.
Place the dish on a window with a bright sun and add water to prevent the towel from drying. You can use spray bottles or misters to soak the seeds or you can add a small amount of water to the saucer using the smallest cup or jug.
You should check your seeds daily to observe how they’re growing.
Troubleshooting
Alfalfa seeds are easy to grow and will be able to germinate in just 2-6 days. Here are some issues to keep an eye on should your seeds not sprout within this period.
Too dry Seeds need water to develop. Alfalfa seeds soak about own weight of water before sprouting, which makes them appear as if they’ve gotten bigger. Seeds that are not moist enough will not develop. You can add more water to the plate until the seeds are moist, but not floating in water. You could also soak your seeds overnight. Make sure you remove them from the dish and wash them well before transferring them to a towel.
Too moistIf the seeds are too moist, the new roots and shoots may rot before they have a chance to develop. The seeds can also become mouldy. While it’s okay for the paper towel as well as the seeds to be damp however they shouldn’t be submerged in water. Every time you mist or water the seeds, drain any excess water.

If you are growing your seeds in winter, place them in a cool place indoors. It is possible that you will need to regularly water your seeds when they are grown in extreme temperatures.
